Erosion is basically built upon a chemical process that we understand pretty
well where the interaction of acids present in food and beverages as well as
from intrinsic acid such as gastric acids can interact with the tooth surface,
and the hydrogen ion, the reactive part of the acid, can interact with the
tooth surface and diffuse down and demineralize tooth mineral and cause the
release of calcium phosphate which leads to the softening. They need the
initial softening of that tooth surface. And, that's sort of the first stage of
the process. And, if this process continues, then we can permanently lose that
surface. And, my understanding is that it's really a combination of that
initial softening followed by some type of abrasive or wear force which will
then remove that surface permanently.
